As the group’s creator, Tamir “Nokio” Ruffin enlisted the help of lead vocalist Mark “Sisqó” Andrews, bassist Larry “Jazz” Anthony, and drummer James “Woody Rock” Green, among others. In 1999, the trio signed with Island Records via Haqq Islam’s University Records label and produced two successful albums, Dru Hill and Enter the Dru, before disbanding for a period of time from late 1999 to 2002, during which time Sisqó and Woody both recorded solo albums on Island.
The gospel music business saw Woody’s Soul Music LP as a modest success; but, Sisqó’s first album, Unleash the Dragon, and the accompanying smash song, “Thong Song,” were both commercial and critical triumphs, establishing Sisqó as a household name outside of Dru Hill and beyond. Sisqó’s second studio album, Return of the Dragon, did not do as well as the first.
After disbanding in 2001, the group reformed in 2002 and recruited fifth member Rufus “Scola” Waller to the roster for their third album, Dru World Order, whose underwhelming success resulted to the group being dismissed from the Def Soul label. The group signed with Kedar Entertainment Group in 2009, and their fourth album, InDRUpendence Day, was released the following year, with new member Tao taking the place of the group’s long-time member Woody, who had left the group once again.
