Lay’s potato chips—they do new flavors well. I don’t think in all of my years of existence as a human that I have had a single Lay’s potato chip flavor that’s made me think, “Dang, that’s disgusting.” Obviously, some are better than others, but for the most part, they are winners and that is a pretty impressive feat for a company that has released more than 300 flavors to cater to different countries, cultures, and internet trends. This summer they are bringing us a limited edition flavor the likes of which I have yet to try as a potato chip flavor: Salsa Fresca Lay’s. These sounds absolutely bomb and I’ll explain why in a second, so hold on to your hats…it’s about to get spicy.
Here’s the thing—we don’t have a lot of info. We have a picture of the packaging via the food news Instagram account @Candyhunting. And we have the ingredient list (of all things), since a quick search revealed that many grocery stores already have these Salsa Fresca Lay’s on their websites, you just can’t purchase them yet (much to my chagrin). But these two do give us a good amount of info! From the packaging we know these will be based on a tomato salsa, the chips will be coated in a red flavor dust, and that they will be at least somewhat spicy or at least have some jalapeño flavor to them (there is a jalapeño front and center on the packaging). Lastly, we know they are limited edition and here for the summer only. As for the ingredient list, these bad boys have a lot of tomato powder (yum—umami central), as well as spices (vague), sour cream, yeast extract, citric acid (which equals tang), onion, garlic, and other natural flavors we will suss out once we can get our hands on a bag. My best guess? These will be a tangy, lightly spicy, sweet, salty, tomatoey, umami, savory flavor-splosion, and I can’t wait to give them a try. I hope that the “other flavors” part means these will have a hint of lime to act as a more natural counterpart to the citric acid, but we will just have to wait and see.
This isn’t Lay’s first foray into the world of salsa potato chips. Back in 2014, during their whole fan-suggestion-based Do Us a Flavor campaign, there was a Mango Salsa Lay’s flavor on the market, which I remember being pretty solid. Also, at another point in the 2010s, there was apparently a Pico De Gallo flavored Lay’s chip that was subsequently discontinued. So this new Salsa Fresca Lay’s flavor will, as far as I know, be the only salsa-flavored Lay’s out there right now. But alas, it is not summer yet, so these bad boys have yet to dance their way onto shelves (get it? salsa?). But the fact that grocery stores have the listings up is a good sign that we can watch out for these rolling out to stores sometime in the next couple of months.
